Tie Score

On Monday night I was supposed to go to Baltimore.  When I woke up Monday morning at 7am, my 3:45pm flight had already been cancelled.  I rebooked on the 7:05pm.  I received several notifications during the day that it had been postponed to 7:15, 7:30, 7:40.

I left for the airport at 4:30, feeling badly that I was leaving a little bit earlier than I needed to but wanting to get gas for my car and just feeling like it would be nice to have a decent dinner at the airport.  I left my husband managing piano lessons, junior rifle coaching, dinner, babysitter, etc.

I drove to the airport, had a lovely dinner, sat there for 2 hours while my flight was moved back to 8:15, then 8:45.  At 8:00 I cancelled.  I said, "this is ridiculous" and I drove home. 

I got home at 9pm in time to drive the babysitter home.

Tuesday night I went to our shooting club to practice.  I was gone from 6:30 until 9.

Wednesday night I worked late.  I have an important project due Friday and my boss was available tonight to give me some feedback.  I got home at 7:30.

Thursday night we are taking one of my coworkers out for a drink because it is his last day.  I will be home at 7:30.

I was feeling guilty because when I work late or travel or go to the shooting club my stay-at-home husband has to manage homework and dinnertime and bath time all by himself.

This morning, Wednesday morning I left early.  I had to drop the boys off at school at 7:45am for math tutoring and then I went to my office.  I got up at 6:45 to shower and get ready.  I left at 7:30.  It was 6 degrees when I left.

Tonight my husband said to me, "You probably dont want to hear this but today after you left, I put the girls on the bus - then I turned our electric blanket and took a 2 hour nap."

I said, "I DO want to hear it because you have, in one sentence, assuaged ALL of my guilt for the WHOLE week."

 

Long time...

Hey!  Here I am.  Alive!  

I bet you were wondering if the last post would be the LAST post.  So was I for a while there.

But the truth is that I have a lot to say and this is a great place for it - a great place to think THOUGHTS without people I have to DEAL WITH judging me so here I am, back.

Did I ever tell you that sometimes I have these dreams where my husband does something to piss me off and I wake up totally pissed at him?  He loves it when that happens.  Basically he wakes up and I'm not speaking to him and he's wondering what the hell he missed.

I like to keep him on his toes like that.

So, anyway, I took a new job.  Same company, same division-ish, but working for my old AMAZING boss and doing some cool stuff.  Kind of high level, STRATEGIC stuff.  

Totally awesome.

Except for the soul sucking 2 hour each way commute and the non-stop gut punching travel.  It will be under control by early November but yikes it's been rough.

So this morning I had to leave my house by 7 to get to work by 9.  This was the 4th morning I've done it and let's be clear.  I AM NOT A MORNING PERSON.

In fact, the only person I know who is LESS of a morning person than I am, is my husband.

For example, the night before last my daughter woke up at 4 and couldn't sleep.  I went into her room, tucked her back in and realized that her room was cold and her bed was cold - so I crawled in to bed beside her for 15 minutes until it was warm then I went back to my bed.

When my husband heard me walk into the room he grunted, "GO BACK TO BED!!!" thinking it was one of the kids.  He's Mr. Sympathy.  You should be glad you've never woken up with an earache in my house.

ANYWAY, (Remember me, miss tangent?) this morning, as I prepared to leave the house I kissed everyone goodbye but I just whispered to my husband, "Goodbye, I love you."

When he woke up 15 minutes later he had had a dream that I had - unbeknownst to him - signed my 10 year old son up for ballet and was making him run all over town in a tutu.  He was pissed (in the dream) and he woke up mad at me.

But then he realized that I hadn't kissed him goodbye so he thought that it had been a real fight.

I dont think he realized that it really was a dream until he walked into the kitchen for breakfast and saw my son without a tutu on.

 

How To Shut Me Up...

3 weeks ago I ordered a new wedding band for my engagement ring.  There was nothing wrong with my old band except that 11 years ago when I first got it I was just looking for the least expensive band I could get (after possibly overspending on the engagement ring itself and our wedding.)

So my fiance and I went to Kay Jewelers at the mall and got the least expensive bands we could.  Except I had forgotten my engagement ring so I never got to try them together before I bought it.

And of course I've HATED it for the past 10.5 years.

So I finally felt like I needed to reward myself with something special after the past couple of years of hard work so I ordered a custom band to match my engagement ring exactly.

(no diamonds just a platinum/gold band with a profile that matched my engagement ring)

I brought it home today and it's PERFECT.

I don't know how it came up but my husband said, "How much did you spend on that?"

So I told him honestly, "I'd prefer not to say."

ASIDE: There are a lot of times being the sole breadwinner is incredibly hard, stressful and anxiety inducing.  Sometimes it seems completely unfair that my husband has NO interest in our financial affairs whatsoever.  

This was not one of them.

Because he just laughed and said, "Kids, that means momma paid too much."

Which is possibly true.

But it's beautiful.

If You Like Pina Coladas...

The other morning before school my husband and I started singing the Pina Colada song... "If you like pina coladas, getting caught in the rain..."

The kids asked us what the song was about so we started to explain the lyrics to them.

We told them that the man was tired of his wife so he wanted to meet someone new, but that when he met her he realized that it was his wife and that they just didn't know how much they had in common.

Now, neither my husband nor I care for pina coladas and neither of us like getting caught in the rain, but by the end of our explanation he and I were both choked up.  That's when I realized (again) that we were made for each other.

 

Zen and the Art of Marriage Maintenance

Last week I had to go to Raleigh. The night before I left I made a pass at my husband that was unequivocally rejected.

"I'm sorry." he said. "I'm exhausted."

"No, no.  It's fine." I lied.  

There was no point getting upset about it since I wasn't taking no for an answer anyway.

He got into bed.  I got into bed wearing pajamas.

"My bum is cold." I told him.

Then I dropped my pants and backed up against him so our behinds were touching.

He ignored me.

I counted to 36.

Then I said, "OK, fine, you can go to sleep" and I went back to my side of the bed.

By the time I would have gotten to 40 he was on my side and acting surprisingly refreshed for someone who had been so tired only moments before.

Seriously, sometimes it's like he doesn't even know me.
