Let's Get Reacquainted...

Holy hell it's been a long month.

Early on I resolved to post more and then I blinked and now it's the end of the month.  Sorry about that.

Last week we drove to North Carolina.  That's 16 hours in a car with 4 kids both ways.  For those of you bad at math that's 16x4x2= A MILLION FREAKING HOURS.

I will say that the DVD player in the new car was a life saver.  Mostly it saved their lives because there were a couple of arguments over the Kindles that I almost resolved by tossing people out the windows.

I was super smart and loaded movies up on my ipad to stream to the DVD player.  We left home at about 4pm on Friday and by the time we were stuck in stop and go traffic about an hour from home I had figured out that the app on my ipad didn't actually OUTPUT a signal.

We spent the next 4 hours making a 2 hour drive to Connecticut and SWEARING up and down that we would NOT be eating dinner at McDonalds.

Later, at McDonald's we resolved to find a Walmart in the morning and buy actual DVDs.

Who knew they even made those any more?

It's late and I'm exhausted so I'll tell you about the next day tomorrow but I want to tell you my FAVORITE part of the first day's car ride...

We were in the car and my second son was sitting right behind me.  You may remember him as the child voted most likely to make my head explode.  Anyway, at the first rest stop I had bought the kids candy and said, "Don't eat it all.  You'll get a stomach ache and we're going to be stuck in the car for several hours."

So later my son says, "What should I do with the wrapper?"

And my husband says, "Did you eat all the candy? We told you not to eat all the candy!"

And my son, reaches up, puts the wireless headphones on his head (which were turned off) and yells, "What's that Dad? I  can't hear you."

It was SO obvious that he was just blowing my husband off that we both laughed and I said, "I guess if you're not going to have any SELF CONTROL you at least need to be good at DAMAGE CONTROL."

Technology is a wondrous thing...car trips have become multimedia entertainment extravaganzas since my day, which was all of about 10 years ago. I was told to count cars with headlights out. Like what is this, the 50s?! As far as kids today are concerned, yes. Yes it was.

I'm looking at a 10-hour x 2 ride in just over a month, and I'm already cringing. Though my kids are still young enough that they may sleep through a fair bit of it.

And I think the DVD industry will always be around, if only because they're SO MUCH EASIER to work with in a moving car.

How does it take 16 hours to drive from Boston to North Carolina? We can drive there from Toronto in 14 hours. Anyway great post - great to see you back.
