On Monday night I ran around my house a little bit crazy.
I pulled my oldest son (10) aside to ask him how his mohawk had been received at school and heard him tell me how some kids had liked it and some kids had made fun of him but in general he didn't care what ANY of them thought and he still liked it and was glad he had done it.
I sat my second son (9) down in his room and taught him what a Fibonacci sequence was and had him start adding it up in his head until he got to 89 and then I had him do it again and again and again because he's a bit emotional and he's REALLY into math and I figured that if his brain was busy adding it couldn't be getting worked up about much else. He LOVED it. (He also asked for BEEF with his pasta at dinner time which almost made me fall over.)
My oldest daughter (7) begged to be allowed to do some work on an online math class. (Note: she is formerly NOT a math person and used to cry when it was time for math - and spelling.) She completed an entire segment of her online math curriculum and patted herself on the back like crazy. After dinner she went back to the online math and flew through "subtraction with borrowing" until I told her that if she didn't stop right now she wouldn't have time to read. Then she flew up the stairs and laughed as she grabbed the book and told me what a great reader she is - this from the girl who used to cry when it was time to learn to read.
Then I told my husband that some one we know is a J-E-R-K and my 6yo laughed at me and said, "A JERK?" because she's taught herself to read and I forgot.
Then it was bedtime and I chased them around a bit telling them to brush their teeth and threatening to "pumbel" them as they ran away shrieking with laughter.
Then I tucked them all in and gave them all hugs and kisses - even the boys because they'll never be too old for momma hugs - and then I went into the girls room and as I leaned over to hug my older daughter goodnight, I whispered in her ear, "I'm so proud of you. You're doing SUCH a good job."
And she whispered back, "So are you."
Which is funny, because that's just what I was thinking as I looked at each of them..
Wow, what an awesome night! You ARE doing a great job! Those nights certainly make up for the harder ones. The ones where no one eats dinner and everyone cries?
