The kids have been back to school for a week and a half and when I took them to the beach for a couple hours today, there was a moment where I was pretty sure I wasn't bringing them back to real life - ever.
There are all these jokes about how excited moms are to get the kids back to school and maybe it's the fact that I work so I can go up to my office and shut the door but I have to tell you that I LOVE it when the kids don't have school because our mornings - and our evenings - and our weekends are so much more laid back.
The morning routine during the school year - wake up the kids, make breakfast, make lunches, make snacks, race out the door for the bus - is so stressful, that I'd be fine if my kids never went to school again.
Except that then they'd be home - FOREVER.
Anyway, between the new back-to-school schedule, the football schedule and the crazy Saturday morning football/soccer schedule, Sunday is my one day to sleep in.
Except that I've been so tired the past two Saturday nights, I've gone to bed sleep by 10pm which makes it hard to sleep until noon on Sunday.
Which is the only reaso my husband is still alive.
Because this morning, after the kids crept downstairs at 8am, he looked over at me and realizing that I was still asleep he started "taking care of himself." Which you'd think is VERY thoughtful of him until I tell you that at 245 pounds his ENTHUSIASTIC exercises shake the entire bed - to the point that there have been times when I've woken up SEASICK.
So this morning when I was awoken from a deep sleep by a tsunami I knew exactly what was happening.
I scrunched my eyes shut and tried to pretend that I was sleeping but quickly realized that my two hour nap the previous day and the 10 hours of sleep I'd already gotten were going to make falling asleep impossible.
At that point the bed had reached resonance and I figured, "If you can't sleep, join em'" so I rolled over and said, "How you doin'?"
Lucky for both of us I can go from zero to sixty pretty fast because I was caught up in no time even though he'd had a pretty substantial head start.
And all I'm going to say is that he's lucky he's fabulous because as soon as it was over I got up and went for a run and he rolled over and went back to sleep.
Well...a back to school post with a difference. I like the cut of your jib, m'lady!

Lot better morning than making sandwiches.
