Back in April my friend A. invited me and my family to her new house in Boston to watch the Boston Marathon. We were very excited. The kids had never seen the marathon before and they hadn't seen A. and her children since they'd moved out of our neighborhood the previous August.
We packed up everything we needed for a trip to the city with 4 children in springtime - including warm weather clothing, cold weather clothing, foul weather gear, water, food, sunscreen, bug spray, toys, a stroller, etc.
We hit the road. We got about 15 minutes from our house when I realized that I did not have A-'s address or phone number with me. I HAD had it in my phone but my phone crashed during an IOS upgrade and I lost it.
"I'll go back," my husband said. "No." I said. "We'll figure it out." So we kept going. I tried to find her cell phone number - no luck. I tried to find her address - no dice. Finally I had an AHA! moment. I googled her in her new town. There she was!
A.K. right there in Newton. So we plotted out directions to her home and got there in no time. We were so early in fact that we circled the block a couple of times. I was surprised in circling the block that we saw no trace of the marathon. She had led me to believe that it passed close by.
Finally we pulled up in front of her house and piled out. The kids ran to the door and rang the bell while my husband and I unpacked. A man answered the door, he looked at me questioningly, "Is this A's house?" I asked. He nodded. "A.K.?" I clarified. "Yes." he said. The kids raced into the living room and started playing with toys. I turned back to the car as my husband approached the house. A woman we had NEVER SEEN BEFORE came to the door. "Can I help you?" she asked.
"We're here for the marathon." my husband told her. And then asked is "A." here?
"I AM A." she said.
My husband burst out laughing as I walked up. "We've got the wrong A.K." he told me.
I laughed. He laughed. They laughed. "Do you need to call someone?" they asked us?
"No" we told them. "Thank you."
We pulled the kids out of their bedroom, where they had been jumping on the bed - and left.
Luckily I remembered that I had the real A.K.'s contact info in my work Blackberry and was able to retrieve it. We arrived at her house sheepish and slightly late but with a great story.
That is a great story. I am extremely glad it is you telling it and not me.

Yikes! I mean, anyone can walk up to the wrong house, but you totally win for your kids making themselves at home. :P

It's awesome that the "fake A" had a decent sense of humor. I'm totally going to knock on random people's houses doors & have my kids jump on their beds!

LOL, hilarious! BTW, don't ever use Google Maps to try to find my house. When you enter my address and map it, Google sends you somewhere completely different...
